Wild-Bird Care

Volunteering with the South African Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre has been one of the most rewarding chapters of my life. Each time I answer the call to rescue an injured bird—whether it’s a fledgling fallen from its nest or a raptor displaced by storm damage—I’m reminded that compassion and skill can give nature a second chance. Under the Centre’s expert supervision, I assess, treat and nurture every patient, tracking progress from the first tentative wing-stretches to the triumphant moment of release.

My daily routine might include cleaning enclosures, preparing specialised diets, monitoring healing wounds and conducting gentle exercise sessions to rebuild strength. I document each bird’s story in a photo journal—recording not just dates and treatments, but small behavioural shifts that speak of resilience. Beyond hands-on care, I engage in community education: hosting workshops on co-existing with wild birds, advising on safe window decals to prevent collisions, and sharing success stories that inspire local conservation efforts.

If you’d like to support bird-care initiatives, learn how to keep your own feathered neighbours safe, or simply read uplifting accounts of nature’s perseverance, I invite you to join me in celebrating every recovered wingbeat.
